auditions

Current and upcoming casting opportunities

Every year we hold casting auditions for two of our flagship programs- Free Shakespeare in the Park and Shakespeare on Tour.  Scroll down to learn more about each program and how to audition for each.

We believe that representation matters, on and offstage. We actively recruit under-represented candidates for all roles and positions within the organization. We believe that a diverse organization is a better organization and that the art itself is greatly improved by collaboration among people with different backgrounds and perspectives.  As such, we greatly encourage BIPOC, LGBTQiA+, gender non-conforming and folks of all abilities to audition.

Our current policy is to cast each production with at least 60% artists of color and at least 60% artists who identify as female, non-binary, genderqueer or trans. We recognize that these policies are not inclusive of all types of difference among people and continue to work toward wider representation.

free shakespeare in the park

Since its inception in 1983, SF Shakes has been bringing our summer Free Shakespeare in the Park program to outdoor venues around the Bay Area, as well as live virtual performances during the pandemic.  Free Shakes employs a cast of around 10, including AEA actors, non-AEA actors, and paid performance interns.  Auditions occur in the winter months, with rehearsals in June, and weekend performances running from July through September.  2023 auditions are now closed, but check back here in the fall for 2024 casting to begin.

shakespeare on tour

For 34 years our Shakespeare on Tour program has traveled to schools, libraries, community centers, theaters, and parks across California to bring a one-hour, interactive version of a Shakespeare play to thousands of students, with an additional focus on education including supplementary materials and playshops for students and attendees.  The Tour employs 10 non-AEA actor/educators (5 full-time and 5 alternates).  Auditions occur in the fall, with rehearsals January/February and touring performances February through May.  Tour auditions are currently closed but check back here later in 2023 for next season’s casting to begin.
