Throughout its history, The Tempest has been regarded as the pinnacle of Shakespeare’s dramatic output. Widely believed to be his final and most autobiographical play, it utilizes the wisdom and understanding gained from a career as a highly regarded dramatist.
Some of the Bard’s most delightful characters inhabit The Tempest's magical island. Prospero, the sprite Ariel, the slave Caliban, and the clowns Stephano and Trinculo, all help bring to life the humor, romance, and adventure of this enchanted tale.
The story captures the essence of the human condition with its compelling and timeless themes. Forgiveness versus revenge, good versus evil, freedom versus captivity, and youthful impetuousness contrasted with aged wisdom are just some of the ideas that Shakespeare illuminates with his powerful and poetic storytelling skills.
The professionally-directed 55 minute performance is accompanied by curriculum materials with THREE WEEKS OF LESSON PLANS, written especially for teachers by director Rebecca J. Ennals. Her guides have been acclaimed as valuable resources in readily facilitating an enhanced understanding of the themes, language, and characters found in Shakespeare’s plays.
As always, our touring production travels with a cast of 5 professional actors in costume, with set, props, and recorded music.
An optional one-hour PLAYSHOP
for students who want to dig deeper into The Tempest, and get some hands-on experience with acting, is also available (immediately
before or after your show).
Rebecca J. Ennals, renowned for her ability to make Shakespeare's
plays accessible to audiences of all levels, returns to direct.
She also directed last season's popular production of Hamlet, as well as our prior touring productions of
Romeo & Juliet, Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors, Two Gentlemen of Verona,
and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The set design (hand-painted by award winning scenic designer Serina
Serjama whose work with Santa Barbara and San Jose Opera companies
has been widely acclaimed) evokes Prospero's island and magical cave, set in an alternate reality with both modern and classical elements. Composer Bill Walker, who has written scores for Shakespeare On Tour the past four seasons, returns with an enthralling sound track that underscores and punctuates the action and emotion on stage. The talented ensemble (playing Prospero/Antonio, Ariel/Miranda, Ferdinand/Caliban, Alonso/Stephano, Sebastian/Trinculo) has been
cast not only for their acting skills but also for their ability
to deliver Shakespeare's language in a clear and articulate fashion.
As always the script (edited for length) includes all major plot points and well-known speeches.
Shakespeare on Tour has not staged a production of The Tempest since 2002; we look forward to bringing this dazzling tale to life at YOUR location!

About Shakespeare on Tour
For over a decade, Shakespeare On Tour has traveled across the state
bringing a fifty-five minute version of a Shakespeare play to thousands
of students. Each fall and spring our touring troupe of actors arrive
at hundreds of venues, bringing sets, props, costumes, and music
to enliven their performance. The production is professionally directed
and suitable for elementary students through adults. The tour visits
more schools than any other theater group in the state; this year
alone, the tour will present more than 200 performances to over
20,000 children!
Schools also receive a curriculum guide written by professional
educators, with lesson plans designed to help teachers prepare their
students to more fully appreciate the performance.
